Overlooking the Aveyron River from an impressive height, the castles of Bruniquel are the first to catch the eye. The enchantment continues when you stroll through the fortified village built in tiers and classified as "The Most Beautiful Villages in France". Founded by Queen Brunehaut, daughter of the Visigoth king, Bruniquel offers elaborate limestone facades, climbing roses and lilacs, wild gardens, steep cobbled streets, beautiful residences dating back to the XVth, XVIth and XVIIth centuries. The castles crowning the rock are made up of the "Young" Castle with its labyrinth of partially restored rooms, the tower of Queen Brunehaut (12th century) but also the "Old" Castle. Built on ancient walls from the Middle Ages, this last one offers a superb panorama on the Gorges of the Aveyron, from the top of its Renaissance style gallery opening steeply on the river.this historical set was used as a decor for the movie "Le vieux fusil" with Philippe Noiret and Romy Schneider. An exhibition of photos taken during the filming of this movie is on display in a room.
